Gahagan Park’s Impact Reaches Far Beyond the Playing Fields

Gahagan Park welcomed more than 425,000 visits over a 12-month period.

Gahagan Park has long been known as one of the community’s most active and well-loved recreational spaces. From youth sports and community gatherings to tournaments and special events, the park plays an important role in the daily life of Summerville families. But beyond recreation, new data shows the park is also serving as a meaningful economic driver for the greater Summerville area.

According to a recent geolocation analysis conducted using data from the Summerville Parks and Recreation Department, Gahagan Park welcomed more than 425,000 visits over a 12-month period from August 16, 2024 through August 15, 2025. The study analyzed activity within the park’s specific geofence and revealed that the park’s reach extends far beyond the local community.

During that time, approximately 10,606 visitors traveled from more than 100 miles away to visit the park. Many of these guests came from across the East Coast, ranging from Florida to Maryland, reinforcing Gahagan Park’s growing role as a destination for sports tourism and regional events.

Average tourist spend per visit night in Summerville = $201.66

Using a typical sports tourism travel profile  (an average travel party size of three people and a two-night stay in the area) the park generated an estimated 7,070 hotel room nights in the last year alone. That level of visitation translates into substantial economic activity for local businesses throughout Summerville.

Visitors attending tournaments, games, and community events often spend time dining at local restaurants, shopping in area stores, fueling vehicles, and staying in nearby hotels. The ripple effect of those visits supports businesses across the community while also introducing new visitors to Summerville’s hospitality, charm, and amenities.

Most frequent visitors outside of 100 driving miles came from: Florence, Lexington, Columbia, Virginia Beach (VA), Leeds (MA), Myrtle Beach, Raleigh (NC), State Park, Greenville, Ballentine, Perry Hall (MD), Camden, Quincy (MA), Charlotte (NC), Lincolnton (GA), Lancaster, and Gulf Breeze (FL).

While the economic impact is significant, Gahagan Park remains first and foremost a community asset. The facility continues to serve local residents through youth and adult athletics, recreational programming, and event opportunities that bring families and neighbors together year-round.

The data reinforces what many in the community already know: Gahagan Park is more than a park. It is a gathering place, a tourism asset, and an important contributor to Summerville’s quality of life and local economy.
