Addressing Downtown Cleanliness: Chamber Hosts Collaborative “Trash Talk”
“No Dumping” signs will be installed this week. Surveillance is also being increased, and violators could face fines of up to $500.

In response to growing concerns about trash and beautification in downtown Summerville, the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce hosted a special Downtown Area Council Meeting in partnership with DREAM.
This “Trash Talk” roundtable brought together town and county officials, downtown business owners, representatives from DREAM, and Chamber leadership for an open forum focused on improving waste management and preserving the charm of Summerville’s historic square.
Key Issues Raised:
- Improper Waste Disposal: Trash being left outside garbage cans and in undesignated areas.
- Receptacle Placement: Roll-out carts placed haphazardly, leading to blocked sidewalks and unsightly conditions.
- Illegal Dumping: Non-downtown businesses, including some contractors, are using downtown receptacles improperly.
- Public Safety Concerns: Vehicles parking in non-designated areas and blocking fire hydrants.
Solutions Discussed:
- Shared Dumpsters & Grease Disposal: A proposal to reduce individual roll-out carts by implementing shared dumpsters and grease disposal solutions among businesses.
- New Signage & Enforcement: “No Dumping” signs will be installed this week. Surveillance is also being increased, and violators could face fines of up to $500.
- Service Enhancements: Republic Services, one of the waste management providers in town, emphasized the importance of having adequately sized containers and regular pickup schedules.
This proactive meeting reflects the Chamber’s ongoing mission to advocate for the business community and swiftly address emerging concerns. Collaboration among local government, businesses, and community partners remains essential in maintaining a clean, safe, and vibrant downtown.
