Y on the Fly is Set to Visit a Variety of Locations

Summerville, SC — January 20, 2025 — The Summerville Family YMCA is excited to announce the launch of Y on the Fly, a new mobile initiative designed to bring YMCA activities, educational resources, and community services directly to neighborhoods that may not have access to a physical YMCA location.  With support from Boeing, Y on the Fly is set to visit a variety of locations, including Dorchester County libraries, DD2 and DD4 schools, senior centers, recreation buildings, and many other community centers across the region.

Y on the Fly acts as a “Y Without Walls,” aiming to eliminate barriers to YMCA resources by offering a diverse range of programs tailored to the needs of each community it serves. From educational enrichment to physical fitness and healthy meals, the program is designed to ensure all children and families can benefit from the Y’s services, regardless of where they live. from a different source.

Key Features of Y on the Fly:

Educational Enrichment: Offering activities in areas such as STEM/STEAM, literacy, and arts, Y on the Fly supports children’s learning and development outside of the classroom.

Physical Activities: Children and families will have access to sports sampling, free play, and games designed to foster physical fitness and fun.

Healthy Meals: In partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank, Y on the Fly will provide nutritious snacks and meals to children and families.

Health and Safety: Programs like Safety Around Water will teach essential skills to keep children safe in and around water, an important aspect of community health and well-being.

Homework Help: Volunteers and staff will provide children with homework assistance  during afterschool sessions, ensuring academic success.

In addition to these offerings, Y on the Fly provides opportunities for community engagement by recruiting passionate volunteers to assist with activities like homework help, meal distribution, and hands-on STEAM projects. Each week, the program will rotate locations to ensure that as many communities as possible can take advantage of these valuable resources.

The centerpiece of Y on the Fly is the newly purchased cargo van, made possible through the support of Boeing’s grant. This van will serve as a mobile hub for the program, equipped with non-perishable food items, STEAM learning tools, and physical activity equipment. The van will allow the YMCA to expand its reach and make an even greater impact by taking resources on the road and into the neighborhoods that need them the most.

Joe Debney, CEO of the Summerville Family YMCA stated “With Boeing’s gracious support, the Y on the Fly program helps the Summerville Family YMCA fulfill its mission to the Lowcountry by allowing us to take our YMCA out to families that might not normally come to one of our branches. This is a very tangible way that we can continue to show love to our community. We are so thankful to Boeing for their continued commitment to our community!”
