SCDOT is Hosting a Virtual Public Information Meeting for Berlin G. Myers Parkway Project Phase 3

Chad Long, SCDOT • March 30, 2021

Virtual Public Information Meeting Open 24/7 from March 30 to April 14

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), SCDOT, the Dorchester County Sales Tax Transportation Authority (DCTA), Charleston Area Transportation Study (CHATS) and the Town of Summerville are proposing to construct the project’s third phase that would include a 3.25-mile roadway on a new location between U.S. Highway 17 Alternate and East Carolina Avenue.

Berlin Myers Parkway Phase 3 would extend existing Berlin Myers Parkway to Highway 17A on the southwestern side of Summerville. The project includes constructing approximately 3.25 miles of a four-lane roadway with a landscaped median and a curb and gutter design. The purpose of the project is to improve roadway connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance safety within the Summerville area. Portions of the Sawmill Branch Walk/Bike Trail will have to be reconstructed, and the Luden Drive parking area will be relocated.

Since the project’s public hearing in January 2020, SCDOT has developed additional floodplain mitigation strategies to improve conveyance of water along Sawmill Branch, a Federal Flood Risk Reduction Project. In addition to the improvements proposed along Sawmill Branch within the roadway project, the project now includes construction activities downstream of the project area to Dorchester Road. These activities are expected to reduce the flood related impacts associated with the project.
