In just one transformative day, more than 500 volunteers will come together to build 40 custom playhouses for deserving children across the Lowcountry. This year’s event raised an incredible $120,000 to support safe and affordable housing initiatives throughout our community.

“The Playhouse Project is one of the most meaningful moments of our year,” said Dawn Bohanan, Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County. “It’s not just about volunteers building playhouses — it’s about watching the magic of the Christmas season come to life for the children who receive them. And what makes it even more special is that every dollar raised stays right here in the Lowcountry, helping meet the growing need for safe, affordable housing.”

The tradition continues to be a powerful reflection of community spirit and local partnership.

“As a Dorchester Habitat board member and a proud Lowe’s employee, The Playhouse Project means a great deal to me,” said Duane Thompson, Store Manager at Lowe’s Home Improvement #2948 in Summerville. “This project goes far beyond building something with wood and paint — it strengthens our community, brings people together, and makes a real difference for local families.”

A Growing Need for Affordable Housing

Across the Lowcountry, home prices and rents continue to rise faster than wages for many working families. Habitat for Humanity addresses this challenge by creating pathways to homeownership that build long-term financial security, healthier neighborhoods, and brighter futures for children.

The Playhouse Project extends Habitat’s mission beyond traditional homebuilding by engaging businesses, faith groups, civic organizations, and individual volunteers. The event raises crucial funds while giving participants a firsthand look at the joy of service, the power of teamwork, and the life-changing impact of Habitat’s work.

About the Playhouse Project

Each volunteer team receives a pre-cut kit with all materials needed to assemble and personalize a one-of-a-kind playhouse. In just six hours, teams construct the walls, doors, windows, trim, and roof before painting and decorating their playhouse. At the end of the build day, teams proudly present their finished creation to its young recipient.

All Playhouse Project donations directly support local Habitat affiliates as they build homes across the Lowcountry.
