Celebrating Summerville's 98th Anniversary of Town Slogan Contest
Honoring Summerville's Rich History and "Summerville, The Flower Town in the Pines" Slogan

On the occasion of the 98th anniversary, the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce was thrilled to unveil a remarkable historic document from the winner of the town slogan contest held by the Chamber in 1925.
The ceremony was held at the Summerville Visitor Center on May 12, to commemorate the iconic tagline, "Summerville, The Flower Town in the Pines."
The Bailey family, town-elected leaders, and representatives from the Garden Club and Chamber of Commerce gathered for the special occasion.
Bailey's winning slogan has long been synonymous with Summerville's rich history and its breathtaking natural landscape. Nearly a century ago, this slogan captured the essence of our town, and now we have the privilege of honoring the woman behind it.
The new display at the Visitor Center includes a captivating portrait of Virginia Lowndes Bailey alongside the original document related to the contest.
Rita Berry, the Chamber CEO, expressed her excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to honor Virginia Lowndes Bailey and her invaluable contribution to our town. "The slogan 'Summerville, The Flower Town in the Pines' has remained an integral part of our town's identity throughout the years, and this event allows us to celebrate a pivotal moment in our community's history."
