Small Businesses, Big Impact: Celebrating Small Business Month in South Carolina

Across the state, small businesses are not just participating in economic growth. They are leading it.

May is Small Business Month, a time to recognize the entrepreneurs, innovators, and community builders who power South Carolina’s economy from the ground up. Across the state, small businesses are not just participating in economic growth. They are leading it.

According to data from South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (SC DEW), small businesses make up the vast majority of all businesses in South Carolina. Even more telling is how quickly this segment is expanding. Over the past decade, the number of businesses with fewer than five employees has surged by an impressive 96.5 percent, growing from 68,670 to 134,969 establishments.

This growth far outpaces that of larger employers. Businesses with between five and 99 employees increased by 24.6 percent, while those with more than 100 employees grew by 15.6 percent. Meanwhile, the number of the state’s largest employers—those with at least 1,000 employees—has remained relatively flat since early 2015.

The data underscores a clear trend: South Carolina’s economic momentum is being driven by small, agile businesses that are scaling quickly and filling critical gaps in the market.

But the impact of small businesses extends well beyond growth metrics. These enterprises employ thousands of South Carolinians, deliver essential goods and services, and create the character and identity of communities across the state.

From Main Street retailers to specialized service providers, small businesses are often the first to respond to local needs and the most invested in long-term community success.

South Carolina’s business climate has played a meaningful role in this trajectory. The steady rise in establishments of all sizes reflects a broader commitment to fostering an environment where businesses can start, grow, and thrive. Strategic investments, population growth, and a supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem continue to position the state as a place where opportunity is accessible at every level.

As we recognize Small Business Month, it is worth noting that behind every data point is a business owner taking a risk. They are building something from the ground up. Each is contributing to the broader economic fabric of the state.

Supporting small businesses is not just a seasonal initiative; it is an investment in South Carolina’s continued economic strength.
