Keys to Change Secures Funding, Faces Challenges

The Keys to Change mission is to provide a safe environment, support services, and an avenue to independence for those in a housing crisis.

Keys to Change, formally known as Dorchester County Community Outreach, is getting a big boon in the form of a one-time state contribution of $1.2 million toward building a new homeless center in Dorchester County. These funds, combined with ARPA funding from Dorchester County and funding from the Town of Summerville, provide the organization with the necessary resources to construct a new men’s center.

The current men’s center has been operating since 2015 at a leased property. Finding a permanent location was critical to the organization’s ability to continue to provide unhoused men in the community with the opportunity to leave homelessness and work toward achieving sustainable life goals.

The Keys to Change mission is to provide a safe environment, support services, and an avenue to independence for those in a housing crisis. This funding will allow the organization to continue to further its mission and serve our community

The organization is grateful to the SC State delegates, Dorchester County Government, and the Town of Summerville Mayor and Council for the funds to construct a new men’s center.

"Owning our building is crucial for Keys to Changes to provide consistent and reliable services in Dorchester County,” Ginny Vicini, Executive Director, explained. “With a permanent space, we can ensure that our programs and resources are always accessible to those in need, allowing us to create a stable and supportive environment where individuals  can rebuild their lives and thrive."

However, it should be stressed that this funding does not cover the administrative costs of running the organization or implementing programs. That’s where the community comes in.

"Tackling homelessness in Dorchester County requires the collective effort of our entire community,” Vicini said.

The organization desperately needs community partners to contribute financially.

“Keys to Change believes that when we all come together—residents, businesses, and local organizations—we can create sustainable solutions that provide hope, stability, and a brighter future for our neighbors in need."
