Bridging the Digital Divide: The Lowcountry Digital Equity Coalition

Member Submission • July 17, 2024

The Lowcountry Digital Equity Coalition (LDEC) is on a mission to connect every resident of the state with high-quality internet. In a world where digital connectivity is essential for daily life, LDEC is committed to ensuring no one is left behind.

Major Programs

Computer Donation Project

The Computer Donation Project is a key LDEC effort. By refurbishing 2,000 laptops donated by community members and local businesses, LDEC aims to provide students across the Lowcountry with the devices they need to succeed. Contributions can be made via their donation page: https://lowcountrydec.com/computer-laptop-donation-project/

Digital Navigator Project

The Digital Navigator Project focuses on training and support. LDEC advocates help their local communities access the internet, provide devices, and offer training to ensure everyone knows how to use these tools effectively. Digital navigators are available to guide individuals through the complexities of the digital world.

Why Access and Adoption Matter

Access to the Internet is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Here’s why:

- **Employment:** Job applications and career opportunities are primarily online.

- **Healthcare:** Telehealth services and information are increasingly digital.

- **Education:** Online learning platforms are crucial for students of all ages.

- **Finance:** Banking and financial management are more accessible online.

- **Civic Engagement:** Government services and information are often found online.

Without access to the internet and the skills to navigate it, individuals are at a significant disadvantage in these essential areas of life.

Broadband Funding: A Major Boost for South Carolina

South Carolina is set to receive one billion dollars to expand broadband access across the state. As part of this initiative, $400 million was allocated by July 1 to fund 129 projects statewide.

Some $9 million from Home Telecom is being used to enhance connectivity in Berkeley and Dorchester Counties, directly impacting 1,600 homes in areas like Cross, Cooper Store Road, Ridgeville, and Harleyville. More information can be found on the South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff website: https://ors.sc.gov/broadband

Looking Ahead: Federal Funding and Impact

Over the next five years, $12.8 million in federal funds will be allocated to support digital equity initiatives, particularly benefiting rural and underserved communities, veterans, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those facing language barriers. These funds are expected to be distributed by August or early fall, ensuring timely support for those in need.

Upcoming Events: Digital Inclusion Week 2024

Digital Inclusion Week 2024, taking place from October 7-13, will feature activities and initiatives designed to promote digital literacy and inclusion.

Call to Action

LDEC invites everyone to help achieve their mission. Here’s how to get involved:

- **Donate Surplus Computers:** Unused devices can make a significant difference. Donations are welcome!

- **Participate in Digital Inclusion Week:** Join the efforts to promote digital literacy and inclusion.

- **Join LDEC:** Become a member of the Lowcountry Digital Equity Coalition and help connect the community.

Together, the Lowcountry can bridge the digital divide and ensure that everyone has the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in a digital world.
