Power Hour Recap: Embracing Global Opportunities with Global Charleston

This Wednesday morning at the Summerville Chamber's Power Hour, we had the privilege of hearing from Stephanie LeVan from Charleston Southern University (CSU), who introduced us to a significant regional initiative that's poised to transform our community—Global Charleston.

What is Global Charleston?

Global Charleston represents a concerted effort by Charleston Southern University and other key regional partners to fulfill a long-standing aspiration: to effectively welcome and integrate the global community into our region. This initiative aims to serve as a vital resource for international residents and businesses, helping them not only to settle but to thrive in Charleston.

The Vision Behind Global Charleston

Charleston's strategic position has attracted over 180 international companies, bringing with them a diverse workforce from across the globe. To date, our region is home to some 41,600 residents born abroad, hailing from 25 different countries. The largest groups of foreign-born residents come from Latin America (46%), Asia (27%), and Europe (19%). This diversity enriches our cultural landscape and contributes to the economic dynamism of the Lowcountry.

Recognizing this potential, CSU, together with partners like the Charleston Regional Development Alliance (CRDA), the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, and the Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG), spearheaded Global Charleston. This initiative is part of a broader strategic effort known as One Region, aimed at enhancing our region’s global competitiveness.

One Region Roadmap

The One Region Roadmap, updated in 2022, outlines six dynamics crucial for achieving global competitiveness. Charleston Southern University has taken a lead role, particularly in promoting global fluency among our workforce and businesses. The roadmap highlights the importance of embracing diversity and fostering an environment where multinational businesses and international talent can flourish.

As Stephanie LeVan vividly illustrated, Global Charleston is not just about economic growth; it's about creating a vibrant, inclusive community where people from all corners of the globe feel welcome and valued. It's an exciting time for the Lowcountry, as we step onto the global stage ready to learn, share, and grow together.

The Chamber extends its gratitude to Stephanie and all attendees for a fabulous morning.

We are excited to invite you to complete a survey that will reveal which tools employers most desire when recruiting and retaining talent. South Carolina is developing a new statewide education and workforce portal—a centralized platform to help employers connect with talent, training resources, and workforce development partners. Your input is critical in shaping the features of this portal to best meet the needs of businesses like yours. This survey will help us identify the most valuable features for employers and how the portal can complement or enhance your existing tools. Your feedback will directly influence the development and prioritization of key features. The survey is open and will close by EOB on Monday, November 10, 2025 . It should take approximately five (5) minutes to complete. SURVEY CAN BE FOUND HERE: Employer/Industry Association Survey Once you’ve completed the survey, we encourage you to share the link with others who may also be interested in providing feedback.
