“I am beyond grateful for the love, encouragement, and support I’ve received throughout this journey,”

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – On Friday, September 12, at 10:00 a.m., Dorchester Habitat for Humanity celebrated the dedication of its 78th home, welcoming Shonta Rivers and her family into their new home on Dean Drive.

Shonta began her journey to homeownership on April 6, 2024, fueled by her dream of building a safe and stable future for her family. With determination, faith, and hard work, she has exceeded the program requirements, completing 525.25 sweat-equity hours (425 required). These hours were spent not only building her own home but also volunteering at the ReStore and assisting in the construction of other Habitat homes.

“I am beyond grateful for the love, encouragement, and support I’ve received throughout this journey,” said Shonta Rivers. “To the volunteers, donors, sponsors, and the entire Habitat team—thank you for believing in me and standing by my side. Together, we’ve built not just a house, but a home filled with hope and opportunity.”

Currently, seven future homeowners are working toward achieving the dream of homeownership through Dorchester Habitat’s program. Each is contributing hundreds of sweat-equity hours while attending financial literacy classes, building alongside volunteers, and preparing to provide a stable future for their families.

“We are so proud to partner with our homeowners,” said Jaye Elliott, President & CEO of Dorchester Habitat for Humanity. “By addressing the critical need for affordable housing one home at a time, we are transforming lives and strengthening communities right here in Dorchester County.”

Dorchester Habitat relies on the continued generosity of the community to make homeownership possible. In the last fiscal year alone, the Habitat ReStore received 26,898 donations, served over 57,000 customers, and contributed $1.8 million in revenue to support the homeownership program. By choosing to shop, donate, and volunteer locally, community members directly help more families achieve stability through safe, affordable housing.

This milestone would not be possible without the dedication of sponsors, donors, and volunteers. Dorchester Habitat extends heartfelt gratitude to each person and organization whose support helps bring homes and hope to Dorchester County families.
