Chamber Power Hour Recap: Palmetto Railways Presentation

Rebecca Collett • October 17, 2024

The railway will serve as a critical link between major industrial entities.

Key Highlights from the Presentation

Palmetto Railways detailed its operations, which include moving essential freight such as chemicals, plastic pellets, and woodchips. The railway serves as a critical link between major industrial entities, including Volvo Cars and Redwood Materials. Construction of the line at Camp Hall is being carried out in four phases. Phase 1 began in May 2023, followed by Phase 2 in June 2024, with the entire project set for completion in the third quarter of 2026.

Regional Impact

The presentation emphasized how the railway is helping to reduce truck traffic on local roads, offering a faster alternative for freight transport from the Navy Base Intermodal Facility at the former Charleston Naval Complex. The use of rail is easing some truck congestion and supporting the future growth of the Port of Charleston.

Future Developments

Attendees also learned about future plans to expand Palmetto Railways’ operations, including the build-out of the Salkehatchie line and the completion of the Camp Hall project. These initiatives are set to further enhance South Carolina's transportation infrastructure and contribute to long-term economic growth.

The Chamber Power Hour provided a valuable update on this important project and its positive impact on the local community. Thank you to Summerville Medical Center for sponsoring this informative event!

We are excited to invite you to complete a survey that will reveal which tools employers most desire when recruiting and retaining talent. South Carolina is developing a new statewide education and workforce portal—a centralized platform to help employers connect with talent, training resources, and workforce development partners. Your input is critical in shaping the features of this portal to best meet the needs of businesses like yours. This survey will help us identify the most valuable features for employers and how the portal can complement or enhance your existing tools. Your feedback will directly influence the development and prioritization of key features. The survey is open and will close by EOB on Monday, November 10, 2025 . It should take approximately five (5) minutes to complete. SURVEY CAN BE FOUND HERE: Employer/Industry Association Survey Once you’ve completed the survey, we encourage you to share the link with others who may also be interested in providing feedback.
