Tips and Ideas for a Pawsome Holiday Season

The holiday season is a magical time of year, filled with warmth, joy, and family traditions. For pet owners, Christmas isn’t just for humans—our furry friends are part of the family and deserve to be included in the festivities. Here’s how you can make Christmas special for your pets while ensuring their safety and happiness.

1. Deck the Halls with Pet-Friendly Décor

Christmas decorations can be exciting, but some can pose risks to pets:

  • Tree Safety: Secure your Christmas tree to prevent tipping, and avoid hanging fragile or edible ornaments low enough for pets to reach.
  • Avoid Toxic Plants: Common holiday plants like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly can be toxic to pets. Opt for pet-safe alternatives or artificial plants.
  • String Lights and Cords: Keep electrical cords out of reach to prevent chewing, and consider using battery-operated lights.

2. Include Your Pets in Gift-Giving

Pets love being part of the holiday excitement, so why not add their name to the gift list? Some ideas:

  • Treat Stockings: Fill a stocking with their favorite treats, toys, or grooming supplies.
  • Interactive Toys: Puzzle toys or feeders provide mental stimulation and entertainment.
  • Homemade Goodies: Bake pet-friendly Christmas treats with simple ingredients like peanut butter, pumpkin, or oats.

3. Capture the Holiday Spirit

Take some time to create memories with your pets:

  • Festive Photos: Dress your pet in a cute holiday sweater or accessories like a bandana or bow. Snap a family photo with your pet front and center!
  • DIY Paw Print Ornaments: Use pet-safe clay to make a keepsake of your pet’s paw print to hang on the tree.

4. Plan a Pet-Friendly Feast

While sharing a meal with your pet sounds heartwarming, some holiday foods are off-limits:

  • Safe Foods: Small amounts of plain turkey, carrots, or green beans can be a treat.
  • Avoid These: Chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and rich, fatty foods can be dangerous for pets. Stick to pet-safe options.
  • Special Treats: Consider making a special Christmas meal just for your pet, like a chicken and rice dish or a festive dog or cat treat.

5. Keep Your Pets Comfortable During Festivities

The hustle and bustle of Christmas can be overwhelming for pets:

  • Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet room or corner where your pet can retreat if they feel stressed.
  • Watch for Stress Signals: Look out for signs of anxiety, like pacing, whining, or hiding, and give your pet time to relax.
  • Introduce Guests Slowly: If you’re hosting, let your pet warm up to visitors at their own pace.

6. Prioritize Safety

Holiday hazards can sneak up on even the most attentive pet owners:

  • Supervise Pets Around Candles: Curious pets might knock over lit candles, so consider flameless ones.
  • Beware of Small Toys: If you have kids, ensure small toys or wrapping materials don’t become choking hazards.
  • Travel Smart: If you’re traveling with your pet, pack their essentials and make sure their ID tags are updated.

Making Christmas Magical for Your Pets

Christmas is all about love, togetherness, and creating joyful memories. Including your pets in the celebrations not only strengthens your bond, but also ensures they feel like the valued family members they are. With a little preparation, you can make the holiday season enjoyable and stress-free for everyone—human and animal alike.

Here’s to a merry and bright Christmas for you and your furry companions!

We are excited to invite you to complete a survey that will reveal which tools employers most desire when recruiting and retaining talent. South Carolina is developing a new statewide education and workforce portal—a centralized platform to help employers connect with talent, training resources, and workforce development partners. Your input is critical in shaping the features of this portal to best meet the needs of businesses like yours. This survey will help us identify the most valuable features for employers and how the portal can complement or enhance your existing tools. Your feedback will directly influence the development and prioritization of key features. The survey is open and will close by EOB on Monday, November 10, 2025 . It should take approximately five (5) minutes to complete. SURVEY CAN BE FOUND HERE: Employer/Industry Association Survey Once you’ve completed the survey, we encourage you to share the link with others who may also be interested in providing feedback.
