A permanent outdoor gathering and activity space will be available soon!

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — The Leadership Dorchester Class of 2026 has announced its project: a community-funded outdoor pavilion for The ARK of SC. The Summerville-based nonprofit has served families living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) for more than 30 years.

The project, selected by the class, will run from April through November 2026. All funds raised will go directly toward building a permanent outdoor gathering and activity space at The ARK's facility located at 502 W. 5th North St. in Summerville.

Project Overview: Outdoor Covered Pavilion Build

The goal of the project is to provide a safe, usable outdoor space that expands and enhancesprogram services for both participants living with memory loss and their caregivers.

The project includes the following construction elements:

  • 25’x35’ ft. Outdoor covered pavilion
  • Ceiling fan(s) and Outdoor lighting for the pavilion and surrounding exterior space
  • Paved walkway from the access ramp to the pavilion

Once complete, the pavilion will support a wide range of programming, including outdoor cognitive and social activities such as cooking demonstrations, art activities, gardening, and group exercise, as well as structured physical activities such as yoga classes, dance, cornhole, and more. The space will also allow The ARK to simultaneously serve a loved one in outdoor programming while their caregiver attends an on-site education series, a capability The ARK has

not previously been able to offer.

Quote From The ARK of SC

"We are incredibly honored and grateful to have been selected by Leadership Dorchester for this meaningful project," said Peg Lahmeyer, Executive Director of The ARK. "The addition of this pavilion will create a welcoming, functional outdoor space for our families, caregivers, and community to gather, connect, and find support. This investment goes far beyond a structure; it enhances the quality of life for those we serve and strengthens our ability to provide compassionate care. We are truly excited to see the lasting impact this project will make for years to come."

How to Support This Project

Leadership Dorchester is seeking community support to help bring this pavilion project to life. A variety of giving opportunities are available for individuals and organizations who want to make a meaningful impact, with recognition options designed to honor each level of contribution.

In addition to direct giving, several special events and engagement opportunities will be announced throughout the year, offering additional ways for the community to get involved and support the project.

Sponsorships and contributions will be accepted through October 2026.
