Award Recognizes Patient Safety Achievements

Charleston, SC (October 31, 2019) – The South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) has awarded Trident Medical Center its 2019 Zero Harm Award. According to the SCHA over the last decade South Carolina hospitals have embraced a new approach toward improving quality of care and are now a national model for how to implement high reliability programs.

Trident Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lee Biggs said the awards are further evidence of the health system’s continued focus on quality care. “Our patients, physicians, nurses and clinicians all have the same goal – care that is appropriate and delivered compassionately. The Zero Harm awards are a recognition of our commitment to detail in every aspect of our patient’s care.” Trident Health consists of Trident Medical Center, Summerville Medical Center, Moncks Corner Medical Center and Centre Pointe Emergency.

The South Carolina Hospital Association’s Zero Harm Award recognized Trident Medical Center’s achievement for no medically caused harm for:
Surgical Site Infection Abdominal Hysterectomy – 18 months
Surgical Site Infection Hip – 12 months

The Zero Harm Awards are a statewide program and are a collaboration with the South Carolina Hospital Association and the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (DHEC). The awards are given to hospitals that prevent all hospital-acquired infections of a specific nature over an extended period of time. According to the SCHA in 2019 alone, 57 South Carolina hospitals won 230 Certified Zero Harm Awards. These awards collectively represent:
1,047,054 days of patient safety
148,173 central line infection-free days
19,771 surgical procedures with no medically caused harm
