New Antepartum Unit Enhances Comfort, Safety, and Advanced Maternal Care for Lowcountry Families

Summerville, SC — HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital is proud to announce the opening of its new High Risk Obstetrical Unit, designed to provide exceptional care for mothers experiencing complex pregnancies. This expansion reflects the hospital’s commitment to ensuring every family in the Lowcountry has access to compassionate, specialized care close to home.

For some expectant mothers, pregnancy can require extended hospital stays—sometimes days, weeks, or even months—before delivery. The new unit offers a safe, supportive environment where patients receive specialized, evidence-based care tailored to their unique needs.

“This dedicated High Risk Antepartum unit will integrate with our 24/7 Obstetric Hospitalist service to provide continuous, specialized care for women with complex obstetric and medical conditions,” commented Jennifer Risinger, MD and Obstetric Hospitalist program medical director. “This unit is a great addition for Women's Services at HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital. Our multidisciplinary team remains committed to improving outcomes for women and babies in our community and providing compassionate care every step of the pregnancy journey.”

What Patients Can Expect:

• Eight private rooms designed for comfort and family support during extended stays

• Close proximity to Labor & Delivery, Level III Neonatal ICU (NICU), and Mother Baby Unit for seamless transitions

• Collaborative care team including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists,

obstetricians, and highly trained nurses

“By expanding our antepartum services, we are reaffirming our commitment to women and families in this community,” commented local OB/GYN Aaron Parry, MD. “Expectant mothers facing complex pregnancies can now count on state-of-the-art care, continuous support, and personalized treatment plans — all without having to leave the comfort and support of their home community.”

“Our team is here to walk alongside families during what can be a challenging time,” said Melissa Arena, Director of Labor & Delivery and Maternal Fetal Medicine. “We focus on personalized care, emotional support, and creating a positive experience for every patient.”

HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital offers a full continuum of women’s and children’s services for

every stage, including:

• Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic for advanced prenatal care

• Genetic counseling and prenatal testing for early detection and planning

• Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) staffed 24/7 by board-certified neonatologists

• Obstetrics nurse navigator and robust childbirth education programs

• Family-friendly amenities, including secure newborn video streaming for peace of mind

For more than three decades, HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital has been a trusted partner in

women’s health, delivering thousands of babies each year and providing specialized care for more than

300 infants annually in its Level III Neonatal ICU (NICU).

This new High Risk Obstetrical Unit ensures that families facing complex pregnancies receive the

highest quality care—right here in Summerville close to home.
