GEL Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Jenny Chubb • May 5, 2021

Forty years ago, George and Molly Greene founded General Engineering Laboratories (GEL). Through their faith, vision, and hard work, GEL grew and prospered. This year we proudly celebrate 40 years of dedicated employees providing analytical testing, environmental consulting, civil engineering and surveying, subsurface utility engineering (SUE) and geophysical services to clients around the world.

From humble beginnings with a handful of employees, to over 300 employees today, GEL now operates three businesses from 9 offices in the United States. These businesses include: GEL Laboratories LLC, GEL Engineering LLC, and GEL Solutions LLC, along with our sister laboratory, Cape Fear Analytical LLC.

As we celebrate our 40th year, we continue to grow. Our people and our culture make the difference: every member of our team is committed to accuracy and integrity and brings a consultative approach and an optimistic attitude to every project. That is why we have been selected through the years to work with some of the country’s highest-profile companies and organizations. It is also why we give every project on which we embark the same dedication to achieving accurate and quality results.

The Greenes established GEL on the simple premise that if you solve problems and treat people well, they will return when new needs arise. These principles have remained intact and are the foundation of GEL today. We are incredibly honored and grateful to have served our clients for the past 40 years. We look forward to continuing to provide services and expertise that help solve the complex challenges that impact our industries and communities for many years to come.

Headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, The GEL Group, Inc. owns and operates a diversified family of companies providing a wide range of technical and professional services to clients across the country. Since 1981, we have been committed to providing technically accurate, cost effective and timely solutions to our clients' problems. For more information, visit www.gel.com.

We are excited to invite you to complete a survey that will reveal which tools employers most desire when recruiting and retaining talent. South Carolina is developing a new statewide education and workforce portal—a centralized platform to help employers connect with talent, training resources, and workforce development partners. Your input is critical in shaping the features of this portal to best meet the needs of businesses like yours. This survey will help us identify the most valuable features for employers and how the portal can complement or enhance your existing tools. Your feedback will directly influence the development and prioritization of key features. The survey is open and will close by EOB on Monday, November 10, 2025 . It should take approximately five (5) minutes to complete. SURVEY CAN BE FOUND HERE: Employer/Industry Association Survey Once you’ve completed the survey, we encourage you to share the link with others who may also be interested in providing feedback.
